The Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane, once called the Brisbane General Cemetery, was established in 1866 and formally opened in 1875. It is a history lesson in itself, encompassing so many varied styles of monuments and burial plots. It displays the fashions in ornamentation, the differences in attitudes to death as regards various cultures and religions, as well as the social structure of the times.
To quote from the Heritage Register listing
http://www.toowongwest.org.au/heritage_register/cemetery.htm
"The Toowong Cemetery is a rare example of the Victorian concept of a mortuary park and the collection of memorials and gravestones record unique documentary information that is of interest to art, military, local history, architectural and sculptural historians, students of typography and demography, genealogists and relatives of the deceased." and
"At the base of Mt Coot-tha, with the Botanical Gardens and Anzac Park opposite, and with the Brisbane Forest Park as its backdrop, the Toowong Cemetery’s picturesque setting maintains the visual allusion of the Victorian concept of a mortuary park on the outskirts of the city. Its elevated location to minimise health risks and its inclusion of all denominations typify the characteristics of late nineteenth century cemeteries."

Inscription reads...
" In ever loving memory of John the dearly beloved husband of Alice Mary Toomey born 17th July at Merlin Co Cork Ireland died 22nd July 1904 aged 39 years R.I.P.
When the cold of death had encircled poor Jack
And his spirit to Heaven had fled
No mind can imagine the grief that we felt
Or picture the tears that we shed
Altho' he is gone it is wrong to deplore him
And yet I feel sorry and grieved in my heart
I know that God's blessings are right there before him
And one day we'll meet never more to part.
